‘Melkite’ means ‘royal’, and denotes loyalty to the Byzantine government.

For 100 years after the Crucifixion there was no Bible. The church in Jerusalem, founded by the disciples of Jesus, was Jewish and communist. They kept kosher and observed Yom Kippur, which means they did not believe that Jesus died for their sins. They were Ebionites, from the Hebrew word for the Poor.

In 135 CE the Roman Army disestablished Judea and expelled the Jews from Jerusalem. It was after this that the Christian churches declared Ebionites to be heretics, and the Ebionite churches disappeared.

100 years after that Christianity was legal and taking over the Roman Empire. That is the context of Melkite Christians.
